Donald Diengdoh’s double secures Meghalaya’s crucial win over Delhi

A sensational brace from Donald Diengdoh propelled Meghalaya to a crucial 2-1 victory over Delhi in the third round of Group B at the 78th National Football Championship Santosh Trophy 2024-2025, held at Deccan Arena Football Stadium on Thursday. The victory was vital for Meghalaya, who had previously drawn 2-2 with Tamil Nadu and suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Kerala. The win kept their quarterfinal hopes alive as they now sit in third place in Group B with four points, behind Kerala (9) and Delhi (6). Meghalaya coach Hering Shangpliang made a key change, bringing in Kevin Rymbai for the injured Fullmoon Mukhim. Vice-captain Damanbhalang Chyne led the team in the absence of captain Mukhim.

After a goalless first half, Meghalaya took control in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 49th minute when Damanbhalang’s long-range shot was saved by Delhi’s goalkeeper Raj Mahato, but Donald was quick to pounce on the rebound and score. Just two minutes later, Donald sealed his brace with a calm finish after rounding Mahato following a perfectly timed through ball. Delhi tried to respond but were thwarted by Meghalaya goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai, who earned his first clean sheet of the final round with a series of impressive saves.

The win puts Meghalaya in a strong position as they prepare for their next match against Goa on Sunday, aiming to secure a knockout spot.
