Dhormonath Sangma Appointed Chief Executive Member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council

Dhormonath Ch. Sangma was elected as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council following the resignation of Albinush R. Marak, who stepped down hours before a special session intended to address a no-confidence motion backed by 21 MDCs, citing loss of majority support. The special session will now focus on forming a new Executive Committee. In a related context, the Meghalaya Cabinet, during a virtual meeting led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, extended the tenure of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council by six months due to ongoing unrest concerning non-tribal participation in tribal council elections. This decision comes after recent violence in Tura and surrounding areas, which included the deaths of at least two individuals following the GHADC’s notification banning non-tribal candidates from contesting in the council elections, initially set for April 10, but postponed due to the civil disturbances.
