Debate Barred, Protest Escalates: AIUDF Exits House Over CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s ‘Miya’ Remarks

On Tuesday, the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a walkout from the Assam Assembly after Speaker Biswajit Daimary dismissed their adjournment motion aimed at discussing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comments about the ‘Miya’ community, a term often used pejoratively for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam. AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam claimed that the Chief Minister’s “provocative statements” were inciting violence and discrimination against the Miya people, leading to physical attacks and harassment in Upper Assam. He highlighted cases where locals were warned against renting to Bengali-speaking Muslims, raising concerns over public safety and mobility within the state. Islam argued that these developments were urgent and required immediate attention, but Speaker Daimary suggested that the matter could be addressed later during the Motion of Thanks for the Governor’s address, which led to the rejection of the adjournment motion due to the impending vote on account presentation.
