Nepal, Bangladesh, and India have finalized a tripartite power trade agreement enabling the export of 40 MW of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh via Indian territory. The deal is a significant step toward integrated energy cooperation in South Asia.
Nepal’s hydropower surplus will be exported to energy-hungry Bangladesh using Indian transmission lines. Bangladesh gains a cleaner energy source to meet growing demand, while Nepal earns revenue from unused capacity. India acts as a strategic bridge, reinforcing its regional diplomatic influence.
Energy ministers from all three countries praised the agreement as a model of multilateral collaboration. Discussions are already underway to scale the exchange volume in future. The agreement supports regional green energy goals and could reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
