Siliguri, July 30: In a recent development, councilors from various wards in Siliguri have reported receiving fake messages demanding money by misusing Mayor Gautam Deb’s photograph. Complaints have been lodged with both the Cyber Crime Unit and the police.
According to reports, fraudsters are sending messages to councilors of Congress, CPI(M), BJP and TMC from a WhatsApp number. After receiving the reply, the scammers start asking for money under various pretexts.
The issue was brought to attention during the board meeting on Tuesday, in which BJP councilor Shalini Dalmia gave details. Several councilors reported similar fraudulent activity.
Mayor Gautam Deb confirmed the misuse of his photograph for extortion attempts. Upon learning of the situation, he ensured that a complaint was filed with the police and cyber crime authorities. At present the incident is under investigation.
