Conservation Move: Kaziranga to Shift Wild Water Buffaloes to Kanha

The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve is set to translocate approximately 50 wild Asiatic water buffaloes to Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. Initially, 15 buffaloes are planned for relocation, but due to logistical issues, only 5 to 6 may be moved first to assess feasibility. The capture operation using tranquillization is scheduled for March 18 and 19, and a mock drill has been conducted by the Wild Buffalo Translocation Implementation Committee. This relocation is part of a broader conservation effort, as Kanha previously hosted a population of these buffaloes. Kaziranga currently houses over 1,000 Asiatic water buffaloes, and previous translocations have occurred, including a past initiative moving buffaloes from Manas Tiger Reserve to Chhattisgarh.
