Congress to Begin Statewide Zonal Conventions in Assam from January 21

The Opposition Congress is set to conduct a series of pivotal meetings across Assam starting January 21, aimed at enhancing its organizational framework and refining strategies for the forthcoming Assembly elections. The All-India Congress Committee (AICC) has designated three special observers for election management in Assam: D.K. Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka; Bhupesh Baghel, former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh; and senior leader Bandhu Tirkey. These meetings will include zonal conventions for various party committees, as mandated by AICC general secretary and state in-charge Jitendra Singh, alongside Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi.

The zonal conventions are scheduled to be held in phases across multiple locations in Assam from January 21 to January 28. The detailed agenda includes:

  • January 21: A convention in Howraghat for members from East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Hojai, and Nagaon districts.
  • January 22: The meeting at Moran for Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Jorhat districts.
  • January 23: A gathering in Bihpuria for Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Majuli districts.
  • January 24: A zonal convention at Kamalpur covering Kamrup (Rural and Metro), Nalbari, Darrang, Udalguri, Sonitpur, and Tamulpur districts.
  • January 27: The meeting in Bongaigaon for representatives from Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Mankachar, Bajali, Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Baksa.
  • January 28: A final convention at Katigorah covering Silchar, Sribhumi (Karimganj), and Hailakandi districts.

The conventions are expected to see attendance from various senior leaders of the AICC and APCC, which signifies their importance in strategizing for the elections and galvanizing party support at different levels in Assam.
