Congress Terms Bordoloi’s Move to BJP ‘Unfortunate’ Amid Political Rows

The induction of Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sparked significant political reactions, with the Indian National Congress labeling the move as “unfortunate.” Congress leader Supriya Shrinate sharply criticized Bordoloi, branding him “one of the most corrupt and manipulative power-brokers Assam has ever seen,” who “plundered the state mercilessly” during his time in office. These comments have resurfaced in light of his shift to the BJP, raising questions about political integrity and motivations.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her regret regarding Bordoloi’s resignation, suggesting it stemmed from discontent with ticket allocations within the party. She noted, “I think he was upset over ticket allocation, and I wish we had a chance to have a conversation. It is unfortunate.” Another Congress MP, Imran Masood, criticized Bordoloi’s departure, viewing it as a betrayal of ideological principles, particularly since he had won a seat with a 65% Muslim demographic against the BJP, making his switch appear as a compromise in the face of his original electoral promises. He expressed hopes to dissuade him from leaving.

In contrast, the BJP has portrayed Bordoloi’s induction as evidence of increasing support for their party. MP Nishikant Dubey ridiculed the Congress, suggesting its decline, and pointed to potential further defections, mentioning Gaurav Gogoi as a possible next candidate to leave. Dinesh Sharma, another BJP MP, spoke of the rising public confidence in the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, implying that the Congress is losing its foothold and becoming a minor regional player.

Similarly, Damodar Agarwal of the BJP remarked on the exodus from Congress, stating, “No one wants to remain on a sinking boat. Congress leaders are seeking better options due to the party’s weaknesses.” The timing of Bordoloi’s resignation, occurring merely 20 days before the Assam Assembly elections, is viewed as a strategic maneuver, particularly following his expressed grievances regarding the party’s candidate choices, specifically his dissatisfaction with MLA Dr Asif Nazar, who he accused of orchestrating a “life-threatening” attack against him in April 2025.
