Coca-Cola India has launched a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing sustainability within the beverage industry with the introduction of 100% Recycled PET (rPET) bottles in its Affordable Small Sparkling Package (ASSP). This move, announced initially in the state of Orissa, marks a significant step towards creating a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
Manufactured by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCBPL), the new Coca-Cola ASSP bottles utilize recycled PET, contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. Compared to traditional virgin PET packaging, the ASSP bottles achieve a remarkable 66% decrease in carbon footprint. This reduction is primarily attributed to the lightweight nature of the PET material and the shift from virgin PET to recycled PET. Alok Sharma, Executive Director, Supply Chain at HCCB, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Introducing recycled PET in ASSP is pivotal for achieving plastic circularity and significantly lowering our overall carbon footprint. It aligns with our broader vision to scale sustainable practices and foster a greener future for the beverage industry in India.”
Enrique Ackermann, Vice President, Technical Innovation and Supply Chain at Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, underscored the company’s commitment to expanding rPET usage in India. He stated, “Our efforts aim to increase access to high-quality, food-grade recycled plastic, driving a circular economy for packaging and advancing our World Without Waste goals.”
