A group of influential citizens in Assam, including prominent intellectual Hiren Gohain and former Director General of Police Harekrishna Deka, have submitted a letter to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. They are requesting the court to take suo moto cognizance against the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, due to his numerous remarks that they perceive as communal in nature. The authors express their grave concern regarding a series of statements made by Sarma, which they believe constitute hate speech, executive intimidation, and targeted vilification of a community commonly referred to as the ‘Miyan’, which pertains to the Bengal origin Muslim community. This appeal underscores the citizens’ commitment to addressing what they see as dangerous rhetoric that undermines communal harmony and incites division within society.
