CID requests more time to investigate road scam in Meghalaya

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Meghalaya has sought additional time to complete its probe into the multi-crore road construction scam involving the Shillong-Nongstoin-Rongjeng-Tura highway. The investigation, which was initially expected to be concluded, has been delayed due to the complexity of the case.

The probe was initiated following an order from Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP), Idashisha Nongrang, after allegations surfaced about large-scale misappropriation of funds meant for the crucial road project. The case, filed in September 2024 by the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), accuses nine individuals, including contractors, senior government engineers, and corporate officials, of financial irregularities.

The road project, originally scheduled for completion in 2014, has faced multiple revisions, pushing its cost to ₹2,366.77 crore. However, despite the massive allocation of funds, significant portions of the road remain incomplete, raising concerns about corruption and mismanagement. Sources indicate that the CID is scrutinizing financial records and construction contracts to establish the extent of the fraud. Officials have assured that all those found guilty will be held accountable.
