CES Foundation to strengthen Meghalaya’s Eri Silk industry with Silk Link Workshop in Shillong

The Customized Energy Solutions Foundation (CESF) is set to host a state-level Silk Link workshop in Shillong on February 26, 2025, at Vivanta Meghalaya, focusing on expanding Meghalaya’s Eri silk value chain. The state contributes 22.6% of India’s total Eri silk production, yet the industry remains concentrated in only four districts. With Ri-Bhoi district and Umden-Diwon as key hubs, the workshop aims to scale production to 5,000 machines across Meghalaya, creating significant livelihood opportunities.

Ms. Netra Walawalkar, Director, CESF, emphasized the sector’s importance, stating, “Expanding Eri silk production across all districts will drive economic growth, empower artisans, and enhance Meghalaya’s rural economy.” Mr. Nitin Akhade, leading CESF’s livelihood projects, added that the sector could engage 438,625 people, making it a major economic driver.

The workshop will bring together government agencies, private sector players, banks, and civil society organizations to address skill gaps, market access, and mobilize ₹100 crore for financial and technological advancements. A key focus will be integrating 100% decentralized renewable energy (DRE) technologies for efficiency. Shillong plays a crucial role in Eri silk retail and exports. With growing demand for eco-friendly, high-value textiles, Shillong’s markets stand to benefit from an expanded supply chain, offering new business opportunities for traders, designers, and entrepreneurs.
