Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused India of orchestrating violence against dissidents and violating Canada’s sovereignty following the assassination of separatist Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. During a parliamentary investigation into Nijjar’s death, Trudeau stated that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had evidence linking the Indian government to the violence in Canada.
In response, six Indian diplomats were expelled from Canada, prompting India to retaliate by expelling six Canadian diplomats. Trudeau further alleged that Indian diplomats were collecting information on opponents of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and passing it to criminal organizations to carry out violent acts. India has consistently denied these accusations, blaming Trudeau for the deterioration of bilateral relations.
