Buddhadev Bhattacharya, the last chief minister of the Left Front government, passed away. He was 80 years old at the time of his death. Buddhadev Bhattacharya was the Chief Minister of the state for 11 consecutive years, from 2000 to 2011. Today, Thursday morning, Buddhadev’s death was reported by his son Suchetan Bhattacharya. In the morning Buddhadev Bhattacharya had breakfast. Soon after that, he fell ill. He breathed his last at his home on Palm Avenue. After receiving this news, political leaders have started to rush to go there.
As soon as this news came to light, the activity at Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan on Alimuddin Street has intensified. On August 9, 2023, Buddhadev Bhattacharya returned home after being discharged from the hospital. He fell ill on July 29 and was admitted to a private hospital in South Kolkata’s Alipore. Doctors kept him on ventilation (invasive) support for a few days there. He got pneumonia. He was diagnosed with a lung and tracheal infection. After 12 days, he was discharged from the hospital. Back home, he was under strict restrictions.
Buddhadev Bhattacharya lived as an ideal communist. There was no question about his writing and erudition. He has several books. But Buddhababu was suffering from serious respiratory problems for a long time. He was under house arrest for the last few years due to illness. He had to be admitted to the hospital several times before. Buddhadev Bhattacharya was admitted to the hospital in December 2020 with severe breathing problems. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee kept track of him. The Chief Minister of Bengal was in touch with Buddhababu’s wife, Meera Bhattacharya.
After leaving power in 2011, he was active in state politics for some time and used to go to the party office. There one day he fell ill with bleeding from his nose. Since then, he started to withdraw from active politics. Later, when he couldn’t do it anymore, he started staying at home. He was infected with COVID in May 2021. Buddhadev Bhattacharya recovered from there. He said goodbye to his comrades.
