Boost to Women’s Livelihoods: Handicraft Centres Launched Near LBWLS

Two handicraft production centres have been established for skilled women artisans living near the Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary (LBWLS) in Assam, initiated by Aaranyak with the backing of the International Rhino Foundation (IRF). The inauguration was attended by notable figures including Dr. Sonali Ghosh, Director of Kaziranga Tiger Reserve; Nina Fascione, Executive Director of IRF; and senior officials from Aaranyak. These centres aim to provide appropriate workspaces, collaborative production facilities, and consistent income-generating opportunities for trained women artisans in the area.

As part of its ongoing commitment to community development and promoting sustainable livelihoods, Aaranyak has partnered with LBWLS, Nagaon Wildlife Division, Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, and the Laokhowa Burhachapori Conservation Society (LBCS) to offer skill-based training to women from the surrounding regions. The objective of these centres is to enhance the technical skills of these women while also securing their financial independence. This initiative represents a significant advancement in institutionalizing community-based handicraft production, empowering women-led enterprises, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities within the region.
