‘Boong’ Makes History, Crosses ₹1 Crore After BAFTA Triumph

Director Lakshmipriya Devi’s Manipuri drama “Boong” has achieved a historic milestone by crossing ₹1 crore at the Indian box office following its re-release on March 6, making it the first film from Manipur to do so. Co-produced by Excel Entertainment and others, “Boong” previously won the Best Children’s and Family Film award at the 79th BAFTA ceremony in London, competing against notable international films. The film was also highlighted at various festivals including the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

“Boong” marks Devi’s debut as a feature film director, with experience as an assistant director on notable films. However, the film’s production was marred by ethnic violence in Manipur, affecting cast members and leading to significant displacement for families, including that of a child actor. Over three years of unrest in the region, particularly between the Kuki and Meitei communities, has resulted in widespread casualties and displacements.

Despite these challenges, “Boong” serves as a social document of Manipur’s pre-conflict state, depicting the unity among different ethnic groups. The film tells the poignant story of a Kuki boy’s search for his missing father. During her BAFTA acceptance speech, Devi dedicated her award to the affected state, expressing hope for peace and the restoration of joy to the lives of displaced children. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh remarked that the film’s achievements have elevated Manipuri cinema to a new level of global recognition.
