BJP-led government in Bengal need of the hour to curb illegal influx: Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that a BJP-led administration across Tripura, Assam and West Bengal would strengthen efforts to tackle illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. “Over the years, Tripura and Assam have seen significant development under BJP governments. However, the absence of a BJP government in West Bengal has hindered coordinated action against illegal infiltration,” the Chief Minister told media persons on the sidelines of a programmed here. Sarma observed that West Bengal has become a weak link in the region’s security and border management framework. “The BJP should form the government in West Bengal as we have strong supporters there. In both Assam and Tripura, developmental works are being carried out. But because of the absence of a BJP-led government in West Bengal, we are unable to effectively fight against illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh,” Sarma said.
“But if the BJP were to be in power in all three states—Tripura, Assam and West Bengal—it would place the region in a stronger position to tackle and curb illegal infiltration from the neighboring country in a coordinated and decisive manner,” he said. Of late, there has been a heightened political focus on border security and migration issues in eastern and northeastern India.
