Bhumi Adhikar Party Condemns CM’s Comments on Guwahati Hills Evictions

The Bhumi Adhikar Party (BAP) has condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statements regarding eviction drives in Guwahati. BAP leaders claim Sarma’s remarks—indicating eviction notices would target “Miyas” instead of indigenous Assamese hill residents—aim to polarize voters to secure support from hill communities as elections approach. During a press conference, party president Prabin Jyoti Kalita accused the Chief Minister of engaging in “divisive politics” concerning land rights for long-term residents of Guwahati’s hills. Kalita highlighted the rejection of land patta applications for indigenous hill dwellers under the Basundhara 2.0 and 3.0 schemes, questioning the government’s intentions if evictions were not planned. He urged the government to revoke these rejections and issue land pattas prior to elections. The party criticized the misleading nature of the Chief Minister’s media announcements, claiming they distract from the ongoing denial of legal land rights to indigenous residents. BAP’s demands include revocation of the Cabinet decision preventing land pattas in landslide-prone areas and reconsideration of NC land classifications. Party officials Ramen Baruah and Pradip Kalita also participated in the conference.
