Bangladesh Assistant High Commissions Host Mother Language Day Events in Northeast India

International Mother Language Day was observed today at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissions in Guwahati and Agartala on February 21, highlighting its significance. In Guwahati, the observance began at 10 am with wreath-laying ceremonies at the Shaheed Minar, where Assistant High Commissioner Zikrul Hasan Fahad paid tribute to the martyrs. This was followed by a communal singing of Ekushey February songs. An afternoon discussion was planned that included an Iftar gathering, featuring messages from the President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, discussions on the importance of Mother Language Day, special prayers, and Iftar.

In Agartala, the ceremonies commenced with the national flag flown at half-mast. Assistant High Commissioner Hasan Al Bashar Abdul Ulayee offered floral tributes at a temporary Shaheed Minar established within the mission premises, with school students also participating in paying respects. Messages from the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister were shared during the observance. Special prayers were conducted in memory of the martyrs of the Language Movement, accompanied by a screening of a documentary detailing this historic event. A cultural program featuring performances by students was also part of the day’s activities. In the afternoon, distinguished guests were set to lay wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and observe a minute of silence to honor the martyrs, followed by a discussion on International Mother Language Day at the High Commission office.
