Bajaj General Insurance bets on emerging prenatal care market with ‘Fetal Flourish’ rider

Bajaj General Insurance Limited has made a strategic foray into a niche but fast-evolving segment of India’s health insurance market with the launch of Fetal Flourish, a dedicated fetal health insurance rider priced at ₹1,025. Announced in Pune on January 14, the product targets the growing demand for financial protection against advanced in-utero medical procedures and high-risk pregnancies.

The rider is offered with the insurer’s flagship products, My Health Care Plan and Health Guard, and is applicable for women aged 18 to 45 years, with a nine-month waiting period from policy inception. It provides coverage of up to ₹2 lakh per maternity event for the first two maternity events under the base health indemnity policy and includes 16 specialised in-utero interventions. These range from amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling to fetoscopic laser surgery, fetal reduction, intrauterine transfusion, and surgeries for neural tube defects and congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

From an economic perspective, the launch aligns with demographic and healthcare trends. With around 17% of women in India giving birth after the age of 35, pregnancy-related complications are rising, increasing reliance on costly fetal procedures that are largely uninsured.

Commenting on the launch, Dr. Tapan Singhel, MD and CEO, said the rider aims to reduce financial strain during medically complex pregnancies. By integrating insurance with modern fetal medicine, Fetal Flourish positions Bajaj General Insurance as an early mover in a specialised segment with long-term growth potential within India’s maternal care ecosystem.
