Attack on MLA Valte: Zomi Council Demands Faster CBI Investigation

The Zomi Council, based in Churachandpur district, has urged the Indian government to expedite the CBI investigation into the alleged attack on BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who died on February 21 after a prolonged illness. In a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the council expressed dissatisfaction with the Centre’s perceived failure to deliver justice for Valte, who was assaulted by a mob in Imphal during ethnic violence in May 2023. The council reported that the investigation’s delay has caused distress within the community and raised concerns about accountability. Citing Article 355 of the Constitution, the council emphasized the Centre’s duty to protect states from internal disturbances and called for a timely and impartial probe by the CBI. Furthermore, the council requested the Centre to engage in structured dialogue to address the political aspirations of the Zo tribes and to implement constitutional measures ensuring political autonomy and security for the community.
