Assam River Tragedy: Boat Capsizes, Three Students Missing

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are conducting an extensive search operation along the Gangadhar River in Dhubri district, Assam, to locate three missing students following a boat capsizing incident on Tuesday. The students, part of a group of 22 who were performing a traditional funerary ritual, were traveling back when their boat lost balance and overturned near Belpara Char. While most students managed to swim to safety, Saha Alom, Mofida, and Sharmin were swept away by the strong river currents. Local police quickly responded to the scene, although the rescue efforts were complicated by the river’s depth, swift currents, and reduced visibility at night. Officials emphasized that locating the missing students is the utmost priority, with all available resources engaged in the search. The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with river transport in the char areas of Dhubri, where country boats are often the primary means of travel despite the associated dangers.
