Assam BJP Warns of Rising Radicalisation in Bangladesh, Flags Threat to State and Northeast

The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday raised serious concerns over what it described as growing radicalisation in neighbouring Bangladesh, warning that the situation poses a direct threat to Assam and the wider Northeast region. In a statement, the party termed the developments across the border a “dangerous, unfolding reality” and cautioned that ignoring the issue would amount to “wilful negligence,” not liberalism. Pointing to Assam’s porous borders and the region’s history of cross-border instability, the BJP said the potential spillover of extremist ideology could have grave implications for security and social harmony.

The remarks come in the wake of Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika’s comments on the recent lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, barely 90 kilometres from the Assam border. Condemning the incident, Hazarika described the act of publicly burning the victim alive as horrific and offered prayers for the deceased.

The minister warned that demographic shifts combined with targeted propaganda can quickly translate into real-world violence, stressing the urgent need to safeguard people, culture and territorial integrity in border regions.

The BJP statement further cautioned that failure to act decisively at this stage could endanger Assam’s identity, sovereignty and internal security. “The spillover of extremist ideology is not fear-mongering but a hard geopolitical reality. Assam is sitting on a ticking time bomb, making vigilance, awareness and timely action imperative,” the party said.

Both the BJP and the minister emphasised that countering cross-border threats and ensuring community safety must now be treated as national priorities, particularly for Assam and the Northeast
