Arifin Shuvoo on Trust, Improvisation, and Building Jimmy’s Character: Inside Jazz City

Sony LIV’s upcoming series Jazz City is positioning itself as a high-profile period thriller, blending espionage, rebellion and character-driven storytelling set against the backdrop of 1970s Kolkata. The show highlights a creative partnership between lead actor Arifin Shuvoo and creator-director Soumik Sen, a collaboration that the makers say helped shape the narrative beyond the written script.

In Kolkata, Jazz City could strengthen regional engagement for the streaming platform by tapping into the city’s cultural and historical setting. Industry observers believe the series’ 1970s Kolkata backdrop, combined with themes of espionage and political unrest, may resonate strongly with viewers in the Kolkata entertainment market, potentially boosting audience traction and platform visibility in eastern India.

Created, written and directed by Sen and produced by Studio 9 and StudioNext, the series also stars Sauraseni Maitra, Shantanu Ghatak, Aniruddha Gupta, Sayandeep Sen, Shreya Bhattacharya, Shataf Figar, Alexandra Taylor and Amit Saha. Jazz City is scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform SonyLIV on March 19.
