In a significant development towards restoring peace in Manipur, members of Arambai Tenggol have surrendered arms to the government under specific conditions. The decision follows a meeting between the group’s representatives and the Governor at Raj Bhavan earlier this week. Speaking to the media after the handover, Arambai Tenggol leader Manindra Mangang stated that the weapons were deposited as part of a structured agreement. He emphasized that the surrender was contingent on key demands, including the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), tackling illegal immigration, and ending poppy cultivation in the state.
As part of the peace process, the government has assured enhanced security in peripheral areas, with both central and state forces deployed to safeguard communities. Additionally, the group has sought general amnesty, which the government has agreed to consider. The government has also allowed free movement for Arambai Tenggol members, acknowledging their role in the ongoing peace discussions.
When questioned about the surrender of weapons from other groups, particularly the Kuki community, Manindra Mangang emphasized that complete disarmament should be enforced across all communities to ensure lasting peace. He reiterated that Arambai Tenggol’s decision was in response to the government’s peace proposal and urged authorities to ensure a fair and comprehensive disarmament process.
