Air quality worsening in Guwahati, experts urge stronger pollution control steps

Environmental experts and academics have expressed concern over the increasing level of air pollution in Guwahati and stressed the need for stronger policy measures and public awareness to tackle the growing environmental challenge.

The issue was discussed during a meeting organised by the Assam Science Society on the theme of urban environmental protection. Experts noted that the air pollution situation in the city has become increasingly complex due to rapid urbanisation, rising vehicle numbers and unregulated construction activities.

According to experts, nearly 80 per cent of air pollution in the city is linked to emissions from vehicles and road dust. Over the past five years, the number of vehicles in Guwahati has reportedly increased by around 40 per cent, significantly contributing to deteriorating air quality.

Speakers at the event emphasised the urgent need to reduce emissions from construction activities, regulate dust pollution, and adopt environmentally friendly development policies. They also called for better urban planning and stricter monitoring of pollution sources.

Environmental researchers pointed out that besides vehicles, brick kilns, construction dust and industrial activities also play a role in worsening the air quality. If immediate action is not taken, the pollution levels could have serious implications for public health and the environment.

The experts urged authorities and citizens to work together to address the issue. Promoting public transport, adopting cleaner technologies, and strengthening environmental regulations were highlighted as key measures to mitigate pollution in the city.

The discussion also emphasised the importance of raising awareness among citizens so that people can play a proactive role in protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable urban development.
