Ahead of Assam Tour, Pawan Khera Calls on PM Modi to Visit Manipur

Amidst ongoing violence in Manipur, Congress leader Pawan Khera emphasized the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state during his trip to Assam for other events. Khera criticized the neglect of Manipur, which has faced escalating unrest since 2023, and posted a sarcastic message on ‘X’ that included booked flight tickets for the Prime Minister from Guwahati to Imphal, urging him to reassure the local population. He highlighted the significance of PM Modi’s presence in calming tensions, stating, “The presence of the Prime Minister can go a long way in reassuring our people in Manipur.”

The unrest intensified following violent protests against the swearing-in of new Deputy Chief Ministers, Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, with security forces clashing with protesters in Churachandpur district. The situation escalated around 6 PM on Thursday, beginning at Tuibong Main Market, where young protesters attempted to push back security forces. Reports from the Manipur Police indicated that several houses were set ablaze overnight in villages around Litan.

Despite these incidents, police noted the overall law-and-order situation in the state had stabilized over the past 24 hours. A Joint Control Room has been established at Litan Police Station to oversee security measures, with senior officer’s present to monitor developments closely. Although tensions remain palpable in affected areas, security efforts have largely contained the situation.
