The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) has publicly mourned the passing of Vungzagin Valte, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Thanlon Assembly Constituency, who died on February 21 at Medanta Medicity, Gurugram, following a prolonged battle for survival after a brutal assault. This attack occurred in May 2023 during a period of significant ethnic violence, where Valte was targeted by a violent mob after a meeting with the then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Tragically, the assault resulted in the death of his driver and left Valte critically injured, requiring extensive medical attention and leaving him with deep physical and emotional wounds.
Valte’s death is portrayed by the ITLF as a stark indicator of the ongoing atrocities faced by the Kuki-Zo community and highlights the pervasive insecurity in Meitei-dominated regions. The forum emphasizes that the attack on a sitting MLA signifies a complete erosion of safety and trust for the Kuki-Zo people. This incident has been a catalyst for the ITLF to reiterate their demand for the formal recognition of a separate administration for their community, as they argue that current conditions make coexistence impossible.
The ITLF honors Valte’s resilience, labeling him as a martyr whose sacrifices were made not for personal ambition but in solidarity with his people during some of their darkest times. His legacy is framed as a lasting inspiration for their continued pursuit of justice, dignity, and political security. Additionally, the ITLF extended heartfelt condolences to Valte’s family, friends, and constituents, expressing hope that his profound sacrifice will bolster their collective determination and unity as they move forward.
