The Modi government has allegedly started “ecocide,” and the project that is being pushed through is a “ecological nightmare,” according to the Congress, which criticised the Centre on Friday over the National Green Tribunal’s creation of a committee to re-examine the environmental approval of the Great Nicobar Island project. To reevaluate the environmental clearance given to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIDCO) for the multi-component mega project in the Great Nicobar Island, the National Green Tribunal has established a powerful committee.
The project includes the creation of a military-civil dual-use airport, a gas, diesel and solar-powered power plant, as well as a township, in addition to the development of an international container transhipment facility.
