Healthcare major Abbott’s initiative, Project Ksheersagar, is transforming India’s dairy sector by empowering farmers and building a sustainable milk supply chain for nutritional products. Launched in partnership with international non-profit TechnoServe, the program is reaching over 12,000 dairy farmers and 51,000 dairy animals across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The initiative provides training in dairy farm management, financial literacy, and business practices, while also supporting infrastructure development such as 130 village-based milk collection centers with cold storage. Farmers participating in the project have increased milk production by 55%, reduced veterinary costs by 60%, and doubled their incomes. Around 60% of the milk powder for Abbott’s nutrition products in India is expected to come from these farmers, directly benefiting families dependent on quality nutrition.
In Kolkata, local dairy vendors and cooperatives have noted a positive impact on milk supply. “Farmers involved in Project Ksheersagar are now supplying consistent, high-quality milk, which strengthens Kolkata’s dairy market and ensures better availability for consumers,” said a market insider. The initiative also highlights opportunities for urban retailers to access standardized, nutritious dairy products sourced locally. Abbott’s Project Ksheersagar reflects a commitment to sustainable agriculture, supporting farmers, improving animal welfare, and securing a reliable supply of high-quality milk for Indian consumers.
