On Monday, the Kohima War Cemetery organized a grand ceremony to commemorate the Remembrance Day. British Deputy High Commissioner, Dr Andrew Fleming, attended Remembrance Day, which has been marked in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honor members of the armed services who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Today is a day to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for peace, justice and freedom,” state Chief Minister Niphiu Rio said in his welcome address. The Chief Minister claimed that the Kohima War Graveyard was located at the exact site of the Battle of Kohima, so it was significant and special. “The fine soldiers bravely fought hand-to-hand to the end and against all odds to ensure the victory of freedom and democracy in this land,” he said. “It was here that Allied and Indian forces joined hands in a brave stand, halted the advance of enemy forces and turned the tide of the war,” the Chief Minister said, referring to the battle of Kohima that took place 79 years ago.
