109th Sajam Lhah Anniversary Commemorated by TIM

On March 17, Thadou Inpi Manipur observes the 109th anniversary of Sajam Lhah, the Thadou War Declaration Day (1917-19), commemorating the courageous actions of their forefathers. This event, rooted in the historic Jampi Summit in Tamenglong district, was marked by Thadou chiefs, led by Khotinthang Sitlhou, who participated in the traditional Sajam Lhah war oath ceremony. During this significant ritual, they declared their collective resolve to resist British colonial rule by performing a sacrificial rite involving a mithun, invoking blessings, and taking an oath of solidarity, which bound them to defend their freedom, ancestral lands, and dignity.

Following the oath, the declaration of war spread rapidly across Thadou villages using a coded signal composed of half-burnt firewood and dried red chilli, symbolizing war and urgency. This non-verbal communication effectively mobilized the chiefs and their communities while maintaining secrecy from colonial forces. The Thadou Gaal (1917-1919) is celebrated as a monumental testament to the bravery and unity of the Thadou people, highlighting the significant sacrifices made in their fight for autonomy.

Despite the valor displayed, contemporary attempts to distort this historical narrative through propaganda have emerged. The Thadou Inpi emphasizes the importance of upholding the truth of their history against misinformation and recognizing the impact of suppression by Kuki extremist forces that threaten their distinct identity. They urge their community to confront this attempted assimilation, reaffirm their heritage, and reclaim their narrative.

The solemn observance of this anniversary invites reflection and commitment to safeguarding the Thadou identity and advocating for a future defined by dignity and coexistence, with the guiding spirit of Sajam Lhah inspiring their efforts for authenticity and empowerment.
